This is a current Gitea limitation, mentioned in this open Gitea ticket: https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/issues/145

Thank you for reporting it. I apologize for the inconvenience it causes, but there's not a whole lot I can do about it until Gitea implements auto-subscribe!
